12 the jungle law
The colonizing powers passing beyond smuggling and piracy in their murderous rivalries, engaged in many fullscale wars to seize rich colonies from one another. The law of the jungle prevailed in their colonial relationships and victory went to the strongest. (W. Foster, ‘Outline Political History of the Americas’, book I, ch.

13 blue law
Среди законов, которые он "цитирует" есть такие: "Ни одна женщина не должна целовать своего ребенка в субботу или в день поста" = ["No woman shall kiss her child on the Sabbath or fasting day"]; "Женатые люди должны жить вместе или быть заключены в тюрьму" = ["Married persons must live together, or be imprisoned"]; "У всякого мужчины волосы должны быть пострижены под кружок по размеру шапки" = ["Every male shall have his hair cut round according to a cap"] -
